Cornelius Frederick was a 16-year-old boy who, after becoming a ward of the state, was held at Lakeside Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan—run by Sequel Youth and Family Services, a private, for-profit, national corporation with a track record of violence against youth.

On April 29, after throwing a sandwich, Cornelius was tackled and restrained by staff until he said he could not breathe, became unconscious, and suffered cardiac arrest. Twelve precious minutes passed before nursing staff called 911. Emergency responders administered CPR and a pulse was regained, but Cornelius later died May 1 in the hospital. Rest forever in peace, Cornelius.
